Campaign for Cottage Cheese: Week 3

I love nachos. What I don’t love, however, are the excessive calories that often accompany copious amounts of tortilla chips, cheese, guacamole, refried beans sour cream, and buckets of Crisco mixed with Honeycomb Cereal [Okay, so maybe no Crisco-Honecomb. Just seeing if you were paying attention. If you put that on your nachos, you are a sick].

I recently concocted a simple way to get rid of a bit of guilt that comes with a pile of chips smothered in goodness–and it involves my favorite ingredient.

Dabbles in Vegan Fare

I’m not a vegan, but I like the idea of veganism for its completely cruelty-free, natural, clean way of eat. I’ve thought about trying out being a vegan, but I don’t think I’m ready to sacrifice yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, pizza, and ice cream yet so I haven’t made the plunge. However, last night I decided to bake some vegan banana-blueberry bread. It turned out quite well!

22 Going on 13: Ain’t so bad after all.

More often than not, I am mistaken as the younger sibling when I’m with my brother. In reality, he wasn’t even a fetus when I was already an English-speaking two-year-old. Read the rest of this entry »

Campaign for Cottage Cheese: Week 2

This week, I’m sharing my most common, easiest usage for cottage cheese: salad topping. I go through cottage cheese incredibly quickly each week in large part because I put it on my salad nearly every day for lunch.

Campaign for Cottage Cheese: Week 1

When I became a vegetarian three years ago, I began to research ways to consume enough protein. After much research, I came across an ingredient of wonder, magic, and mystery: Cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is low in calories and high in protein. In fact, 1/2 cup of lowfat cottage cheese has about 80 calories and 14 grams of protein. One chicken breast has about 280 calories, and while it has more protein I don’t think it is nearly as versatile as cottage cheese.

I know what some of you are thinking. Cottage cheese is for being reserved for nursing home brunch buffets and people that like clumpy food. Chicken, on the other hand, can be used for fajitas, nachos, pot pies, and filling take-out buckets.  I’m here to prove to you that cottage cheese is incredibly versatile, tasty, and best of all doesn’t require Chicken Little to bite the dust.

Every Sunday I am going to provide a recipe utilizing cottage cheese. Here is one of my finest cottage cheese recipes which I recently concocted to calm my raging sweet tooth.

Introduction: Meet the Blogger

Hello, all.

My name is Alicia. I am a health writer, currently living in New York.  My goal is to teach people a thing or two about healthy living through writing, with some humor and subjectiveness thrown in. Health writing is important, but doesn’t need to be stuffy and boring. If you want that, go read the paper.

Health is personal–in fact, our well-being is one of the most personal things we possess. In that vein, I intend to share photos of myself, my friends, my family, and my food on our adventures into the realm of wellness. I will not tell stories like a faceless reporter sans opinion, but rather a real person striving for balance just like so many of us in this world.

I’m especially interested in food and nutrition, but lately the range of my interests has greatly expanded. I have read a lot about health over the past year, and I hope to learn as much as I can about the inner workings of our bodies. Our bodies are powerful machines that can be transformed, controlled, and manipulated in ways that can affect the way we feel on the inside and the outside. Our health behaviors can extend and shorten the length of our lives, which to me, is the most fascinating thing of all.

I digress. I’m sure I’ll reveal too much about myself as this blog blossoms, and nobody wants to read a resume. Therefore, I’m not going to write a traditional bio for you. If you want that, ask my mother. Instead, I thought I’d share some random facts about myself. After all, could you really trust the credibility of my future blog posts without knowing my favorite TV show and my biggest celebrity crush? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
